Preparing your HVAC for Spring

Believe it or not, our long New England winter has finally come to an end. While spring has just begun, the warmer temperatures are right around the corner. You can start “spring cleaning” by preparing your HVAC unit now—and we’ve got five tips to make sure your system operates at peak efficiency this season.

 1) Change Your Air Filter

Do you remember the last time you changed your air filter? For many homeowners, this is a task that falls by the wayside until a problem occurs. Changing your filter monthly has a major impact on the overall health of your HVAC system, and can reduce its energy usage.

 2) Test the Cooling Function Early

We know the temperatures in early spring don’t generally require you to crank the air conditioner, but you’re going to want to make sure you’re ready before you really need it. Simply turn the AC on and set it to below room temperature. Make sure you can feel the cool air coming out of your vents and listen to ensure there aren’t any unfamiliar noises. If you experience a problem, you have plenty of time to schedule an AC appointment with Girard.

 3) Seal Your Home’s Envelope

You need to roll up your windows before you run the air conditioning in your car, otherwise, what’s the point? Sealing your home’s envelope is a similar concept. Keep an eye out for areas in your home where that cool air could leak out such as opened windows, loose door jambs or other small openings. Seal any cracks you can so your HVAC unit isn’t working harder than it needs to be.

 4) Install a Honeywell Wi-Fi Smart Thermostat

We can help you make energy efficiency easy with the installation of a Honeywell Wi-Fi Smart Thermostat. This will give you on-the-go control so you can control your home’s temperature anywhere at any time. You can program the device to use more energy while you’re home and to cut back while you’re out. It can even use geofencing, to auto-adjust to your preferred temperature as you approach your house!

5) Spring Ahead with Regular Maintenance

The best way to ensure your HVAC system is always running at peak efficiency is to be prepared with regularly scheduled repairs. Our Peak Performance program plans eliminate the stress and worry surrounding your system and allow us to fix small issues before they turn into costly, necessary repairs. They also offer varying benefits including a 19-point annual inspection, discounted or free replacement parts, no trip charges and preferential service times.
